We’ve just recently begun sourcing out professionals for our mentorship programme (yes, you read that right) and in that time, have stumbled upon several Singaporean authors. Two of them are even part of the league
Today we’ll list out some awesome locally-written books you simply must check out. Some of the authors have written more than one book, so be sure to click on the links we provide to see what other cool stuff they have!
Wolf at the Door, by J. Damask
J. Damask is the pen name of league member and MUTB-trainer Joyce Chng. Incidentally, she’s also hosting our workshop in February, but more on that at a later date.
Being an ex-teen vigilante comes with its own set of problems.
Housewife, ex-teen vigilante…and shape-shifting wolf…Jan Xu has enough problems without adding her sister’s to the mix. Marianne is returning to Singapore and she’s filled with strange ideas. She’s also not alone. She’s coming home with a new boyfriend who has a dark agenda of his own.
With sibling rivalry threatening the inevitable: a battle-to-the-death with fang and claw, Jan and Marianne must overcome their issues if they’re ever going to find peace within their troubled relationship.
Content warning: Violence, fang-and-claw fighting.
You can read a short excerpt of the book here. Or you could read more about Joyce and her other work (plus find goodies like short stories there) on her blog.
Crown of Earth’s Desire, by Terry Ho
Sure looks like a legit fantasy book you’d see on the shelves, huh? Crown of Earth’s Desire is but the first book of The Forgotten Hill Chronicles.
We can’t find much information on it yet because it’s not published, but it does seem like it has been inspired by Peranakan culture. This is what its Facebook page has to say:
An epic fantasy series set in a world inspired by Southeast Asian myth and folklore.
Exciting!
The Steam Powered Globe – an anthology
This was the largest cover photo I could find of the book! No matter. This is a Steampunk anthology written by Singaporeans! There’s no summary, but here are the story titles:
“Ascension” Leow Hui Min Annabeth
“No, They Dream Of Mechanical Hearts” Claire Cheong
“Morrow’s Knight” Viki Chua
“Colours” Yuen Xiang Hao (He’s a BWL member! ‘notkieran’)
“The Morning Glory Incident” Mint Kang
“Help! Same Angler Fish’s Been Gawking for Eight Minutes!” Ng Kum Hoon
“Captain Bells and the Sovereign State of Discordia” JY Yang
You can pick this up here.
If you’ve always thought Singapore had no writers of genre fiction, think again! According to one writer of The Steampowered Globe, the National Library Board even created a whole new library catalogue catagory for them, called ‘Steampunk Singapore’.
We sure are going places

Hi. Are you guys gonna write something that’s not in the E-zine format?
What would you like to see?

Please get someone to edit the reviews and news on your website. Language errors – grammar and spelling – will hardly endear you to English teachers. Check out the 2011 list of misused and overused words. Our budding writers must not think it’s alright to use cliches in their writing or to ride on tired genre bandwagons.
Do you want a summary of the individual stories in “Steam-Powered”?
I’d love that. Can you post them here?
Will do. Need to spend a couple of days reading Captain Bells and Angler Fish again to get a better feel of how to encapsulate them in one sentence.
Ascension:
Ada Lovelace, the world’s first programmer. Imagine what she could have done with the backing of the Qing dynasty…
No, They Dream of Mechanical Hearts
Labori are just machines, no more than a pale imitation of humanity. Or are they?
Morrow’s Knight.
Helen Morrow discovers the legacy of her dead brother– a legacy that people would kill to keep hidden, and already have.
Colours.
What are you willing to fight for, when all hope is gone?
How the Morning Glory Grows.
Clockwork power armour and out of control biological aberrations from the vats of genetic splicing? Just another night’s work for Iron Inch Kum.
Help! Same Angler Fish’s been gawking for Eight Minutes!
Jay is trapped in a lift on his way to a job interview, but neither lift nor job interview are anything that you would expect.
Captain Bells and the Sovereign State of Discordia.
An unlikely rebellion, led by an unlikely leader. Prepare to be surprised.
