Oh, it’s so good to hear from you. We’re in the process of having many of our books published in Chinese. The Emotion Thesaurus is already available for purchase in that language, and both trait thesauruses are slated for publication this summer, with the rest of our books on a schedule that hasn’t yet been determined. COVID has slowed the process, so our publication dates have been more fluid than normal, but that’s the current schedule. We do have a Physical Features Thesaurus here at our other site: https://onestopforwriters.com/physical_features (and it can also be accessed within our Character Builder tool: https://onestopforwriters.com/about_cbt and as for the Historical Setting Thesaurus, we have a collection of ideas for possible future thesaurus development but most likely if we brought this on we would add it to our existing online database here (same site) https://onestopforwriters.com/scene_settings just as we’ve already added some other speculative settings and it’s easier to update than writing a full book. It would also allow us to concentrate on time periods that might be the most useful first and foremost. In the meantime, I hope some of the current settings, especially natural ones, might be a help to you. 🙂

Hi, Anna. Thanks for reaching out with your suggestion. This is a common problem, trying to figure out the ins-and-outs of settings that we’re not personally familiar with. Angela and I have discussed this kind of thesaurus in depth in the past, and we have decided that there are too many variables for us to be able to accurately create a thesaurus like this. Details vary from region to region depending on what part of the area the person lives in, the time period, if it’s rural or urban…there are just too many factors for us to cover them all correctly. So while this is a great idea and we recognize the need, it’s just not a topic that we feel we can do justice with our thesaurus format.

Being a transplant to Arizona, from Ohio, it surprised me when we built a house to have the building code require the breaker box mounted to the outside of the house. In Ohio, they were typically in the basement, or failing that, inside the laundry room.

If I’d lived my whole live in one place or the other, I *never* would have thought twice about writing scenes one way or the other. I broached the question with my local writing group (it’s rare to find a native Arizonan, so most of us have experienced different regions). While the conversation started out as just language differences (cellar vs basement), it quickly shifted to common bugs (here: scorpions and black widows; other areas: centipedes). Now, I wonder what other tidbits might be different.

And all this because I decided to set this novel in Alabama, a place I’ve never lived and have only passed through on the way to somewhere else.

If you decide to develop this into a thesaurus, I’ll bet your readers (me included!) could cough up a wealth of “you gotta live there to know this” type of things.

Thanks for all the thesauri you’ve already created! They are great for knocking out the cobwebs and getting my keyboard clacking away!

Oh my goodness–I am so sorry you had so much trouble. Ugh, Amazon can be great…and also terrible. Can I ask why you couldn’t use Book Depository? I see the book listed (but maybe it wasn’t when you looked?). I like BD myself – great for buying and sending books to so many countries. That’s how I give and buy Aussie books, too!
