This sounds great, Glen. It wouldn’t work for me because when I listen to books, I’m usually also doing something else and can’t focus as much as I need to if I’m editing. But for most of the world, who are better multitaskers, this sounds like a great option. What software do you use?

It’s as good as an audible book and picks up the misspells, missing words and clunkiness within the writing.

It’s amazing what we hear when we read out loud 🙂

I will actually wander around my apartment with pages of dialogue and sort of act out my scenes. It becomes readily obvious if there are dialogue problems…I learned this the hard way!

If it’s the sound of your own voice that distracts you, another option is to use dictation software to have it read to you. I personally don’t think this is as effective because you lose some of the inflection, and you can’t notice other things (like the spots where you’re wanting to skim to the next section), but it’s a good alternative.

But after reading your article, I’m going to add it back to the editing process. Maybe it’ll work for me next time!

Thanks for the great article!

I do miss reading aloud to my kids. I did it as long as I could but finally had to give it up when my older was around fifth grade, since I wasn’t keeping her interest. I’m so glad you’re finding The Emotion Thesaurus helpful 🙂
