Thanks, Erin! Oh good for you. It’s not easy to find those little sessions but for many writers they do help us stay grounded through crises. Hope all is well for you now! :O)

I especially love the one about not letting life interfere. 2019 was a series of crises for my family. While I couldn’t spend as much time on my manuscript, I still found ways to do small focused sessions so I kept moving forward. Lord knows what would have happened if I hadn’t.

Totally get it, Dawn, and congrats on the finished book! Glad you got the motivation you needed from NaNoWriMo. Writers encouraging writers is also one of my favorite motivating methods!

So sorry to hear about your loss, Julie. 🙁 Life definitely does interfere–we might as well expect it. The key is to get over that hump of resistance to starting over again. Good luck!

Glue, it, staple it, promise it a reward, whatever you need to do, prioritize that time in front of the keyboard with your WIP (not Facebook, etc)!

My life did go off the rails when my father passed away. When a crisis occurs, writers must ride the emotional roller coaster (never knowing when an onslaught of tears will happen). Then we must force ourselves off and get back to work. And yes, scheduling writing time into the calendar is essential!

But I finally managed to finish a book – several actually, though only one has been thoroughly finished (edited and such) and self-published.

Something that helps me finish a book is NaNoWriMo.org. You have probably heard of it, but for those reading comments and haven’t, it stands for National Novel Writing Month. This occurs in November. The idea is that you focus on writing for the whole month in order to reach a goal of 50,000 words. The writing won’t be perfect, but it’s a worthwhile goal that helps you finish writing the first draft of your book. If you’re lucky like me, your community will have a NaNo leader who coordinates group events and gathers like-minded people who can provide you with encouragement. The months following November is when you work on polishing and editing your finished book.

SO TRUE. There are a lot of quotes I could pull from this post to use for inspiration. Thanks very much for sharing this with us!
