Thanks so much for this helpful post, Colleen. You’re right–there are so many newsletter subscriptions I rarely open because of lack of time. But there are some I can’t wait to click on when they show up in my inbox.

Good luck getting yours started, Frankie. And I agree–hate popups! But authors say they can be effective. I imagine it’s in finding those that work but are less irritating…

Great advice–it’s really about making it about them, not the author, and thinking about what they need or will like. Too often I see newsletters just turn into an endless book pitch for the author’s books, and that’s a wasted opportunity to really connect.

I haven’t yet started a blog or an e-newsletter but I do subscribe to a few. I have to agree with most of the Colleen’s points. There is one author newsletter I always read and enjoy primarily because the author is interesting, brief, and often ties her small adventures and observations to her most recent book or current WIP. I don’t generally look for give aways but I do appreciate a clean, attractive page that’s not littered with ads and offers and distracting elements (I particularly dislike animation, pop-up windows and scrolling text). I’m looking forward to more information on this topic.
