This is an excellent question. You can achieve this by showing things that the protagonist misunderstands or doesn’t recognize as important. It involves trusting your reader and hitting just the right balance of clarity and subtlety, so it’s not an easy thing to achieve but it’s definitely doable with well placed clues, foreshadowing, and dialogue that gets misinterpreted or misunderstood.
