You will find reading people do not only like to be surprised, people even like to surprise you! I have seen a young late teenage male reading a serious novel in the tram – and it wasn’t for school, no marks on the side, no notes he made, only reading.

I have seen perm-haired elderly ladies reading the most gruesome of thrillers, have seen males read Jane Austen, have seen some business attire ladies read romances … really, you cannot predict your audience.

I run into a lot of writers who don’t think enough about this before & while a book is written and even don’t have a strong grasp as they lead up to launch. Understanding who you are trying to reach with your messaging will save so much time and money because you’ll have a more directed approach to marketing. Plus, understanding who an ideal reader is will help us make sure that future books hit the mark too!
