Hi, Rusty. This is a good question; different readers probably have their own opinions about this, but I can tell you what I think. I’d much rather learn things as the character learns them. I’m currently reading a story by a wildly popular author who is great at raising questions in the early pages. But then she kills the tension by immediately answering them.

From a reader’s standpoint, questions are good. They pique curiosity and make them want to keep turning pages to find out what’s going on. So I would say it’s good to keep readers guessing and reveal information to them as the character figures it out. An added benefit is that this keeps the reader close to the character. They’re walking through the story with the character, learning as they learn, being surprised when they’re surprised, etc. instead of sitting back and having information told to them that the character doesn’t know.

Now, this is my opinion, and as you can see, I prefer a close point of view. But if your story would best be told from an omniscient viewpoint, you should go that route. It really depends on what’s best for your story.

I hope that helps!

I’m working on a fantasy story where my main characters had their memories wiped and wake up in a dungeon with no idea where and who they are. I am writing it in third person but the reading learns information about the characters as the characters learn it. From a readers stand point, would you rather learn as you go or already know things even if the character doesn’t? For example, their names, would you want to know their name up front or find out when they do? I appreciate your feedback.
