Thank you so much for the download that explains weaving in a subplot. I think this will be very helpful for my future writing.
All of the Bond movies (and no doubt the books by Ian Fleming, though I’ve never read them) have a male-female relationship as a subplot. Could the books, written beginning in 1953 have begun a trend to create action plots with romantic subplots?
I’m quite sure that, currently, Hollywood likes to have/adds romance as subplot in most action movies so they will appeal to both men and women. I call them Date Movies.

Hi Talia, thanks. I have a number of posts on my blog Live Write Thrive that goes much deeper into layering plots and subplots and weaving in romance. In the next post for Writers Helping Writers, I’ll show a bit about that layering process.

It doesn’t really affect the main plot at all, it’s just kind of a side plot that’s been there from the very first scene. But, one of the things I will be working on during the revision phase is the overarching plot/goal, so hopefully I will be able to make the two plots combine a bit.
And thanks for the great post! It was really helpful. 🙂

In the first novel I wrote, I don’t quite have romance, but I do have a good amount of sexual tension (that I plan to resolve in the sequels to that book). For me that’s the thing that really grabs me and pulls me into a story–the ‘will they or won’t they’. In the other two manuscripts I’ve written, the romance is more front and center, but again they’re the slow-burn kind where you’re not even sure whether or not these characters are going to get together until the end, when they do. I’m not sure I’d ever be interested in writing about an already established couple, haha — for me, it’s all about what happens if these two people were to act on these feelings, in addition to everything else going on in the plot.
