Michael, congrats on your new book! (This is what happens when I go away for a month–I miss all the cool stuff.) I hope your launch went well, and we are so grateful for the knowledge you share with us. It makes each of us a stronger writer. 🙂

I know it’s been a while since you all responded to my article. My only excuse is that my new book just launched 3 days ago, and that involved a LOT more work than anticipated. But I still should have told you all sooner how much I appreciated your comments in response. And of course to Becca and Angela for inviting me in the first place. It sounds like almost all of you have experienced the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to getting critique, but thankfully most of you have landed in groups that are truly helping you. For what it’s worth, what I consistently hear from fiction writers is that their best critique relationships have come from online connections. Anyway, let me know if you ever have questions I might help with, keep writing, and Stay In Your Essence!

Consider trying to find a critique group on-line. You may go through several people before you find a group or individual that clicks with you, but I’ve made dear friends and critique partners that way.

Jo’Anne, I mentioned this in response to another comment, but if you write for a certain genre or audience, you can find local critique groups through their websites. That’s where I found the incredibly awesome SCBWI group that I attended when I lived in Florida.

Ugh. Facilitators are CRUCIAL in a good critique group.

The worst group for me was, unfortunately, the very first one I attended. It consisted of a group of writers who all wrote different genres. While they all had opinions, they didn’t know the ins-and-outs of kid lit and often gave advice that didn’t jibe with the expectations of the industry. I lived in a small town and this was the only critique group around; from there, I went online and found Critique Circle and Angela, and thank goodness, things were all downhill from there ;).

It’s magical when you can find a small number of people who “get” each other. 🙂
