I am looking for a professional editor to proofread my manuscript (a memoir), before I self-publish it. I appreciate any information.

Jennie, as always, your generosity in sharing what you know with writers is a treasure. I hope with all my heart to come back to Author Accelerator for a book coach to finish my memoir about attending college as a mother of five. Thanks for all you do.

Enjoy your holidays, everyone!

SO true! Many editor/coaches overlap each other in what they do; the lines aren’t always very clear. But it helps to start with some strongly drawn lines around the types of editing for sure.

No one can edit themselves. Few of the striving Pulitzer Prize winners can afford even one editor. Most, who are available, cover all the bases, and usually, not very well.

Editors are artists. Some are valuable. Some destroy. My opinion is that if an editor doesn’t understand passive voice, they do more harm than good.

Becca and I are lucky in that we’ve found a terrific one. It took us some time to find a good one (and a lot of “fixing” after some not-so-good-ones) and so we’re keeping him close. 🙂

In our NF work, we use a proofreader for our entries, and a developmental editor for the teaching content. I can’t imagine trying to write a book without this type of help, and yet I see indie writers all the time say they didn’t pay for editing or coaching. (These are usually the same ones that complain about poor sales…)

With the surge in independent and self-publishing, all of a sudden there were all these different services and providers for writers that aren’t always clearly defined. Thanks for breaking it down!
